Hello! I'm Mathieu, a counseling intern working on my Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Bradley University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Biology from the University of Virginia. Like all relationships, the counseling relationship requires open and direct communication to reach its greatest potential. To that end, my top priorities in my work are establishing open rapport with my clients and adjusting my approach to find the right treatment for them.
In my practice, I strive to incorporate both what makes us different and what connects us. For the first, I keep a multicultural and inclusive lens. I believe that every client enters counseling as an expert of their own lived experience, each with a different perspective of the world . You know yourself best! And even if you don't think you do, I'm hoping I can show you that you do during our work together. For the second, I also aim to practice with an existential lens. Being human means accepting some titanic and unchangeable universal truths. Death, isolation from others, uncertainty in the world, responsibility over one's life, lack of meaning and control; all of these are experienced by absolutely everyone at some point in their lives and, in one way or another, underlie most client concerns. Counseling is a vital tool to help clients understand more fully how these concerns manifest our lives, and in doing so, live more richly and freely."
